pequa pride.
Massapequa, Long Island is a sociological bubble. A singular, isolated, paint by numbers, suburban community. The type of place that makes you wonder why people generalize the north-east as "liberal". Massapequa is a slightly less wholesome Norman Rockwell, If you will. From a statistical perspective, it is comprised of a roughly 98 percent caucasian populous. This is "de facto" segregation, not irregular from any suburban community.
No, there are no Raisin in the Sun welcoming committees here. But there are plenty of Swatstikas carved on school desks, and a frequent use of racial slurs, the most frequent being the one that starts with an "n". This is not different from past generations and will most likely not be different in future generations. Why bother to reprimand your kids for using a racial epithet when there is no one there to get offended by it? Perhaps, this old-world racism is a result of the tacit approval of adults... maybe these students spew racial slurs to incite a laugh, but their grandparent's generations and perhaps even parent's racism, which has been inherited by their children, was borne from actual hatred.
Don't get me wrong, I am full of "Pequa Pride". Who isn't proud to live in a town famous for having the best burgers on Long Island. I speak, of course, of All-American. This is quite fitting as greasy things are a fairly accurate representation of Massapequa (or at least of its youth's hair-cuts). I guess it is quite interesting the Baldwins used to live here, although only one is half-way famous and I can't really recall any other movies he was in besides Team America. By the way, if you want to name our school's auditorium after a famous alumni, why not name it the "Joey Buddafucco Auditorium" as that would be a far more realistic representation of the average Massapequan. Yes, there are plenty of reasons to live in Massapequa. For one, there are never a lack of protective parents, whose PTA presence nearly rivals the alcohol presence in their children's blood, or of cops who protect our home owners from delinquent teenagers who conspire in Taco-Bell parking lots. If they put them all to justice soon enough they might even be able to get to the thirteen year old drug dealers...but i digress.
"You should be grateful you live in a nice town instead of the projects". Maybe, but at least people who live in the projects don't have to PRETEND to be poor. Perhaps I'm just cynical and I shouldn't expect people to have the capacity to be rich AND intelligent, because God doesn't give with two hands...but is it really asking too much to be able to walk down Merrick Road without being berated by obnoxious varsity players in their parents shiny cars (would they be driving if their parents owned Ford Pinto's?).
I would rather not live in a place infamous for pot, racism, kids beaming with "italian pride", and the mafia. I would rather not live in this hypocritical, laughably sheltered, culturally ignorant, community of teenagers. Im not idealistic enough to believe I can ever change anything, in a rant written out of frustration at 2:38 in the morning. Perhaps someone whose done more homework can. Thanks for your time. I hope I don't get "whacked".
